Femzone 60

Femzone general information

What is Femzone used for?

Femzone capsules are a dietary supplement containing various herbal extracts and vitamins that are used to support hormonal balance in women during reproductive years and manage symptoms related to premenstrual syndrome (PMS).  Symptoms of PMS include physical and emotional symptoms that occur during a woman’s normal menstrual cycle, including breast swelling and pain, bloating, abdominal cramps, fatigue, mood swings, irritability, joint or muscle pain, changes in eating behaviour and weight gain.  These symptoms are thought to be due to various factors, including an imbalance in hormones, neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain), and inflammatory chemicals like prostaglandins as well as other factors like diet and lifestyle.  Femzone capsules can also be used to help manage hormonal changes associated with the perimenopausal period.

How does Femzone work?

Femzone capsules several active ingredients that are used in combination to help treat and manage symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).  Femzone capsules contain a dried extract of the shrub Vitex agnus castus fruit (Chaste Tree) that has traditionally been used as a natural herbal supplement to relieve symptoms of PMS.  PMS is thought to be the result of a chemical imbalance in sex hormones like follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and brain neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.  The fruit of Vitex agnus castus contains a mixture of iridoids and flavonoids (plant metabolite with several pharmacological properties including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant), and some compounds similar in structure to the sex hormones have been isolated from the leaves and flowers.  Clinical studies have shown that a dry extract of the fruit of Vitex agnus castus is an effective and well tolerated treatment for the relief of symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome, where there is no known cause.  It is thought to work by restoring hormone balance, reducing levels of FSH, also by modulating stress induced prolactin secretion from the pituitary gland and restoring elevated prolactin levels to normal via the neurotransmitter dopamine1,2,3.  Femzone capsules also contain an extract of the root of Paeonia lactiflora, the Peony plant, which has also been known as an ancient herbal remedy in China, Korea and Japan with pharmacological properties including antioxidant, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties4.  This extract known as total glucosides of peony (TGP) or as paeoniflorin, contains several active ingredients that have been found to inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and inflammatory cytokines4  Other components of Femzone capsules include an extract of the Matricaria recutita flower (Chamomile), which has also been used for centuries as a herbal medicine and has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties4 and anxiolytic (reducing anxiety) properties5,6.  Zingiber officinale Rhizome (Ginger), also known as root ginger has been traditionally used as a natural anti-inflammatory.  A clinical study has shown that capsules containing ginger root powder were more effective than placebo in relieving period pain (dysmenorrhea)7.. Pyridoxine or vitamin B6 plays an important role in amino acid, lipid and glucose metabolism; also in the synthesis of several neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and is involved in mood regulation and pain perception.  It is also a key factor in haemoglobin synthesis and function. Clinical studies indicate that pyridoxine may be helpful for PMS8, relieving anxiety and mood changes associated with PMS and premenstrual depression, but does not help with physical symptoms9.

What does Femzone contain?

Femzone capsules contain several active ingredient extracted from natural herbal sources, including Vitex agnus castus fruit (Chaste Tree) (500mg), root of Paeonia lactiflora (Peony) (700mg), Matricaria recutita flower (Chamomile) (670mg), and Zingiber officinale Rhizome (Ginger) (170mg).  They also contain Pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6) (16mg).
