Advocate for Cats over 4kg 6 Tubes

Advocate for cats over 4kg general information

What is Advocate for cats used for?

Advocate is a topical treatment for cats over 4kg and is used for the treatment, prevention and control of infestation with parasitic insects, including fleas and ear mites; also for parasitic intestinal worms.  Advocate is effective against all stages of the cat flea (Ctenocephalides), including the eggs and larvae.  It kills over 98% of adult fleas within 12 hours and by also targeting the larval stages it helps control reinfestation from fleas in the cat’s environment.  It is also effective in controlling flea allergy dermatitis, which can be irritating and cause itching in cats sensitive to flea bites, particularly the saliva of the flea, and can cause hair loss and eczema.  Ear mites (Otodectes) live in the ear canal of infected cats causing a black wax-like discharge with irritation and itching and are responsible for the majority of ear infections in cats.  Advocate is used for control of roundworm (Toxacara) and hookworm (Uncinaria) including larval and immature adult stages, but it is not effective against tape worm, another antihelminth is needed to control this parasite.  Roundworm is an intestinal parasite that causes diarrhoea, weight loss and poor condition, particularly in kittens, and can be a hazard to people.  Hookworm feeds on the intestinal wall, causing significant blood loss.  Intestinal parasites are transmitted when the eggs are ingested from the environment such as the soil, and can cause serious health problems; roundworm deprives cats of essential nutrients and may cause intestinal obstruction.  Heartworm (Dirofilaria) is a roundworm that is transmitted by a mosquito bite and the larvae travel in the blood to the heart and lungs.  Advocate kills these parasites breaking the parasitic lifecycle and protecting your cat from serious and potentially life-threatening illness.  By targeting all stages of the parasitic worm lifecycle, Advocate helps control reinfestation from worms in the cat’s environment.  Advocate is suitable for treating fleas in cats younger than 9 weeks but for treating mites and worms cats and kittens should be over 9 weeks old.

How does Advocate for cats work?

Advocate contains two active ingredients, Imidacloprid an insecticide and Moxidectin an anthelminthic (deworming).  When applied to the skin Advocate spreads rapidly and is absorbed through the skin into the circulation, so that it is effective against internal and external parasites.  Imidacloprid in Advocate is a systemic insecticide belonging to the neonicotinoids class of insecticide and was designed to mimic nicotine, a naturally insect neurotoxin found in many plants.  When a sucking insect like fleas and mites feed on the cat’s blood they ingest imidacloprid, which blocks transmission of nerve signals and disrupts the insect’s nervous system, which kills the fleas and mites Advocate stops flees feeding within 3-5 minutes.  The insects can also be killed by absorption of the imidacloprid through their intersegmental membrane, so do not need to bite to receive a lethal dose.  Moxidectin in Advocate is an anthelmintic drug that kills intestinal parasitic worms by blocking nerve transmission and works by binding to specific ion channels in the cell membrane.  These are glutamate gated and gamma-aminobutyric (GABAA) mediated sodium channels, which are important in neuromuscular function of the parasite and the result is an influx of sodium ions into the cell, which disrupts nerve transmission causing paralysis and death.  The parasitic worms will lose their grip on the intestinal wall while feeding on blood and pass out in the cat’s stools.  One application of Advocate last for 4 weeks.
