Clomazol general information

What is Clomazol used for?

Clomazol vaginal cream 2% is a topical treatment for candidiasis or thrush of the vagina and vulval area.  Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by the yeast Candida albicans, with symptoms including vaginal itching, vaginal soreness, a white odourless discharge from the vagina and pain during intercourse.  It is normal for Candida to be present in the vagina, but under certain conditions it can become overgrown and cause candidiasis, such as when taking a broad spectrum antibiotic, certain conditions like diabetes and hormonal fluctuations, such as during pregnancy, menstrual cycle or taking the oral contraceptive pill or HRT.  Vaginal Candidiasis in diabetics can mean that your blood sugar levels are not well controlled and this should be discussed with your doctor.  Clomazol vaginal cream 2% is a short-term, three day treatment to relieve symptoms of candidiasis and clear up the infection.

How does Clomazol work?

Clomazol vaginal cream 2% contains clotrimazole, a broad spectrum topical antifungal belonging to the azole group and is used to treat fungal infections of the skin, including the yeast infection Candidiasis.  Clotrimazole in Clomazol vaginal cream 2% works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of the fungal cell membrane that is not found in animal cells.  This weakens the fungal cell membrane causing the cell contents to leak out killing the fungus.  Clotrimazole in Clomazol vaginal cream 2% is a topical antifungal that acts locally but is not readily absorbed into the bloodstream. 

What does Clomazol contain?

Clomazol vaginal cream 2% contains the active ingredient clotrimazole 20mg/ml (2% w/w) in a cream base, used to treat candida candidiasis (thrush) of the vagina.  It also contains glycerol monostearate, cetostearyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol (1% w/w), disodium edetate, cetomacrogol, propylene glycol, liquid paraffin, dimeticone, white soft paraffin and purified water

What are the side effects of Clomazol?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Clomazol vaginal cream 2% include local skin irritation (stinging, redness, blistering, peeling, swelling, itching) or skin reactions like dermatitis at the site of application.

When should Clomazol not be used?

You should not use Clomazol vaginal cream 2% if you:

  • are allergic to clotrimazole or any ingredients in Clomazol
  • are pregnant or are breastfeeding, without discussion with your doctor
  • if you are using a latex contraceptive agents like condoms or a diaphragm as Clomazol vaginal cream may reduce their effectiveness and safety but only during treatment
  • are menstruating
  • are using tampons, intravaginal douches, spermicides or other vaginal products at the same time as using Clomazol vaginal cream
  • have a fever or lower abdominal pain, back pain, foul smelling vaginal discharge, nausea, vaginal haemorrhage and/or associated shoulder pain and you should consult your doctor

How should Clomazol be used?

You should apply your Clomazol vaginal cream 2% using the applicator provided to insert the cream deep into the vagina.  You should apply your Clomazol vaginal cream 2% once daily, in the evening for three consecutive days.  Symptoms should improve within four days and the infection should clear up within seven days, if not you should consult your doctor.  You should avoid intercourse during treatment with Clomazol vaginal cream 2% to prevent reinfection or partner infection.

How long should you take Clomazol?

You should apply your Clomazol vaginal cream 2% once daily, in the evening for three consecutive days. 

Missed dose of Clomazol

If you miss a dose of Clomazol vaginal cream 2% apply it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose.  Do not take a double dose.

How should Clomazol be stored?

You should store your Clomazol vaginal cream 2% below 25°C in a cool dry place.
