Lexanox general information

What is Lexanox used for?

Lexanox oral paste 5% is a topical treatment for minor aphthous ulcers, which are ulcers that form on the mucous membranes of the mouth and are also known as canker sores.  Aphthous ulcers are often recurrent and can be painful; minor ulcers usually last between 7-10 days and then heal without leaving a scar.  It is thought that the cause of these ulcers is related to an immune response where local immune mediator chemicals are produced in response to a specific trigger.  Several possible triggers have been identified, including certain systemic conditions that are associated with an immune disorder like Behçet syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus and inflammatory bowel disease; also mechanical trauma, such as a self-inflicted bite, nutritional deficiencies (particularly B vitamins B, iron and folic acid), viral infection, emotional stress, and hormonal changes associated with the menstrual cycle.  Lexanox oral paste 5% provides pain relief and promotes faster healing of minor aphthous ulcers.

How does Lexanox work?

Lexanox oral paste 5% contains amlexanox, an anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory, immunomodulator that is used to treat minor aphthous ulcers in the mouth.  Amlexanox in Lexanox oral paste 5% is thought to work by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes from cells that are involved in the immune response such as mast cells, neutrophils and mononuclear cells.  Amlexanox in Lexanox oral paste 5% has been found to accelerate healing of these ulcers as well as reducing pain, redness (erythema) due to inflammation and also the size of the lesion.  Lexanox oral paste 5% has been formulated to adhere to the mucosal skin of the mouth, which helps keep the medication in contact with the ulcer and reduces the likelihood of it being dislodged and swallowed.
