What is Tinvista used for?

Tinvista tablets 500mg are used to treat bacterial and parasitic infections caused by susceptible bacteria and protozoan (single cell) parasites.  Tinvista tablets 500mg are an oral treatment for the infection trichomoniasis, a genital infection of the female and male genitourinary tract caused by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis; vaginitis, a vaginal infection; gingivitis; inflammation of the gums caused by bacterial plaque; giardiasis, an intestinal infection caused by the protozoan giardia lamblia; amoebiasis or dysentery, caused by the protozoan entamoeba histolytica.  Tinvista tablets 500mg are used to treat infections of the skin (cellulitis), blood (septicaemia) chest and lung (pneumonia and empyema), genitals or womb lining (endometritis), inflammation and infection of the peritoneum or lining of the abdomen (peritonitis).  Tinvista tablets 500mg are used for the prevention of post-operative bacterial wound infections after gynecological and stomach surgery.  Infection of the stomach with the bacteria Helicobacter pylori is associated with the development of peptic ulcers and Tinvista tablets 500mg help eradicate the bacteria and reduce the incidence of ulcers, in combination with other medication.

How does Tinvista work?

Tinvista tablets 500mg contain tinidazole an antibacterial and antiprotozoal that has activity against a wide range of pathogenic micro-organisms, including species of anaerobic bacteria belonging to the the bacteroides, fusobacteria, clostridia, eubacteria, anaerobic cocci, Helicobacter pylori and gardnerella vaginalis; and the protozoa trichomonas, entamoeba histolytica, giardia lamblia and balantidium coli.  Tinidazole in Tinvista tablets 500mg works by entering the cell of a susceptible bacteria or protozoa and causes damage to the bacterial or protozoan DNA, which disrupt its structure and inhibits DNA synthesis, thereby preventing microbial cell growth.

What are the side effects of Tinvista?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Tinvista tablets 500mg include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, stomach pain or cramps, headache or tiredness, vertigo, dermatitis, itching,.

When should Tinvista not be used?

You should not use Tinvista tablets 500mg if you:

  • are allergic to tinidazole or any ingredients in Tinvista
  • are pregnant or are breastfeeding
  • you have a blood disorder or a history of blood disorders
  • you have neurological disorder, including epilepsy
  • have been drinking alcohol within 72 hours
  • are taking medicines that interact with Tinvista, including anticoagulants like warfarin, drugs with a similar structure to tinidazole

What medications interact with Tinvista?

Several medications interact with Tinvista tablets 500mg and should either not be taken while you are taking Tinvista or only after discussion and instruction from your doctor:

  • Drugs that cause a serious reaction with Tinvista: alcohol if consumed within 72 hours, drugs with a similar structure to tinidazole can cause neurological disorders like dizziness, vertigo, ataxia (loss of muscle coordination)
  • Drugs that are affected by Tinvista: anticoagulants like warfarin

How should Tinvista be taken?

You should take your Tinvista tablets 500mg swallowed whole with a glass of water either during or after a meal, once or twice daily and at the same time each day.  The dose you take and how often depends on what you are being treated for and your doctor’s recommendation and may be a single dose or several doses over several days.  You should continue to take your Tinvista tablets 500mg for 2-3 days with a high dose or 5-7 days with a low dose, depending on the type of infection and your doctor’s recommendation.  You should only take your Tinvista tablets 500mg until your infection has cleared up, as they are not intended for long term use.

Missed dose of Tinvista

If you miss a dose of Tinvista tablets 500mg take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose.  Do not take a double dose.

You should store your Tinvista tablets 500mg below 25°C in a cool dry place and protect from light.
