How does Vivitonin work?

Vivitonin tablets contain the xanthine derivative propentofylline, which is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor and also acts as an adenosine reuptake inhibitor. Both these actions cause vasodilation or relaxing and widening of blood vessels, which increases blood flow, particularly to the heart and skeletal muscle and to the brain; increasing oxygen supply and reducing resistance to blood flow which reduces the workload on the heart. Propentofylline in Vivitonin tablets also has direct effects on the heart and increases the heart rate and the force of muscular contraction of the heart. These actions are particularly helpful for dogs with heart problems. Another action of Propentofylline in Vivitonin tablets is to act as a bronchodilator, which widens the airways and helps increase air flow to the lungs.
