Deep Sleep Capsules with 5HTP

Deep Sleep Capsules general information

What is Deep Sleep Capsules used for?

Deep Sleep Capsules are a nutritional supplement used to help induce sleep, promote healthy sleep patterns and support relaxation of body and mind.  The sleep-wake cycle is a daily biological pattern of alternating sleep and wakefulness, which is in the order of 8 hours of sleep and 16 hours of wakefulness.  The sleep-wake cycle is governed by certain chemicals in the brain and is closely linked to the body’s circadian rhythm, which can be defined as a biological clock that controls the body’s physiological processes and is comprises a group of cells in the hypothalamus of the brain.  Light and dark play a major role in these processes and in defining the sleep-wake cycle.  A healthy sleep pattern is important for normal functioning of the endocrine system (hormone secretion), immune system and is linked to health issues like diabetes and depression1, 2.  However, some form of sleep disorder is very common and is suffered by most people at some stage in their lives.  Sleep disorders cause disrupted sleep patterns and include difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep, known as insomnia, which leaves you tired and unrefreshed on awakening, the transition from sleep to wakefulness also called arousal; also intermittent wakefulness through the night, or inability to sleep, which results in sleep deprivation.  Chronic sleep disorders can impact on the ability to carry out normal daily functions and compromise health1, 2.  Deep Sleep Capsules help promote relaxation, relieve stress and support healthy sleep patterns.

How does Deep Sleep Capsules work?

Deep Sleep Capsules contain an extract of the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia, a tropical shrub native to West Africa, whose seeds are rich in (5-Hydroxytryptophan) 5-HTP3.  5-HTP is is an intermediate metabolite in the biosynthesis of serotonin, a neurotransmitter (brain chemical that allows nerve cells to communicate), which regulates many body activities, including, appetite, temperature control, pain sensation, sexual behaviour, mood and sleep.  Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract has been used traditionally as an herbal remedy for sleep problems.  5-HTP is well absorbed into the blood from the gastrointestinal system and is not affected by food, therefore, it is readily available to cross into the brain where it can be used to synthesise serotonin4.  5-HTP is synthesised from the amino acid tryptophan, which is obtained from the diet.  Tryptophan is converted by the body to 5-HTP, which is an intermediate metabolite in the biosynthesis of serotonin and this takes place both in the central nervous system and in peripheral tissues.  Although serotonin is used in other cells in the body, such as platelets, the serotonin available to the brain must be synthesised within the brain cells or neurones, as serotonin cannot cross the blood brain barrier.  Both tryptophan and 5-HTP easily cross the blood brain barrier and are therefore, available for serotonin synthesis, which raises the amount of serotonin in the brain and in turn increases stimulation of nerve pathways that regulate sleep and other processes.  Serotonin is also converted to melatonin, the hormone produced in the brain that coordinates the circadian rhythms, based on light/dark cycles with biological processes, including sleep. The enzyme responsible for this conversion is only activated by darkness.  Supplementation with Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract has also been shown to have an anxiolytic (reduces anxiety) effect in rats5.  Griffonia simplicifolia in Deep Sleep Capsules works by providing precursors for important chemicals known to promote sleep and reduce anxiety.   Deep Sleep Capsules also contain an extract of Eschscholzia californica, the California poppy, and Passiflora incarnata, the Passion-flower, both of which have been used traditionally as an herbal medicine for insomnia and anxiety.  Studies in mice have also demonstrated sedative and anxiolytic effects6, 7.  A placebo controlled study has also demonstrated that the drinking tea containing a low dose of Passiflora incarnate improves sleep in for healthy adults with mild fluctuations in sleep quality 8.  The bark of Piscidia erythrina, the Jamaican dogwood is another traditional herbal remedy found in Deep Sleep Capsules that is thought to have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and sedative properties, due to its rich phytochemistry, which includes isoflavones, glycosides, tannins, resins.  Its sedative properties have been used to help with anxiety and sleep problems9.  Deep Sleep Capsules also contain Pyridoxine Hydrochloride or vitamin B6 and magnesium oxide, which play an important role in the synthesis of serotonin and thereby also melatonin.  In this way Pyridoxine and magnesium oxide may contribute to promoting healthy sleep patterns and improving insomnia.

What does Deep Sleep Capsules contain?

Deep Sleep Capsules contain the active ingredient Griffonia simplicifolia (5-HTP) (50mg).  They also contain Passiflora incarnata, the Passion-flower (750mg), Eschscholzia californica, the California poppy (200mg), and Piscidia erythrina, the Jamaican dogwood (50mg), Magnesium Oxide (50mg - Equiv. Magnesium 30mg) and Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, vitamin B6 (1mg).

Treating insomnia with Deep Sleep Capsules

Sleep disorders mainly insomnia, cause disrupted healthy sleep patterns, which leaves you tired and unrefreshed on awakening and include difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep and intermittent wakefulness through the night making it difficult to transition from sleep to wakefulness (also called arousal).  The sleep-wake cycle is a daily biological pattern of alternating sleep and wakefulness, which is in the order of 8 hours of sleep and 16 hours of wakefulness, is governed by certain chemicals in the brain and is closely linked to the body’s circadian rhythm, the biological clock that controls the body’s physiological processes. Deep Sleep Capsules contain a mixture of herbal remedies and minerals that are thought to help induce sleep, promote healthy sleep patterns and support relaxation of body and mind.  These include Griffonia simplicifolia, Passiflora incarnata, the Passion-flower, Eschscholzia californica, the California poppy, and Piscidia erythrina, the Jamaican dogwood.  These herbal extracts are thought to promote the synthesis of brain chemicals like serotonin and melatonin that promote sleep and also have sedative and anxiolytic (reduces anxiety) properties.  The combined ingredients of Deep Sleep Capsules contribute to promoting healthy sleep patterns preventing improving insomnia.

What are the side effects of Deep Sleep Capsules?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Deep Sleep Capsule occur if taken in high doses and can cause Serotonin Syndrome due to high levels of serotonin in the system with symptoms including, nausea, diarrhoea, dizziness, sweating, increased heart rate and can cause agitation or restlessness fever and seizures.  Deep Sleep Capsules are not recommended for long-term use.
