What is Chlorsig used for?

Chlorsig eye ointment 1.0% is a topical antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, including conjunctivitis, which causes the infected eye and eyelid to become sore red and inflamed, with a sticky discharge and crust formation on the eyelids that can make the eyes stick together. Chlorsig 4g eye ointment 1.0% acts directly on the infection in the eye to relieve symptoms and prevent spread of the infection.

How does Chlorsig work?

Chlorsig eye ointment 1.0%contains chloramphenicol, a broad spectrum antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, like conjunctivitis that can be caused by a variety of different bacteria, including Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus viridans, Moraxella species and Enterobacteriaceae. Chloramphenicol in Chlorsig eye ointment 4g acts by blocking bacterial protein synthesis so that the bacteria cannot produce proteins that are needed for its growth. This kills chloramphenicol-sensitive bacteria and prevents spread of infection in the eye which relieves the symptoms caused by bacterial conjunctivitis.

What does Chlorsig contain?

Chlorsig eye ointment contains the active ingredient chloramphenicol 1.0% (4mg in a sterile oculentum base, suitable for the eye), a broad spectrum antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis. It also contains liquid paraffin and wool fat.

When should Chlorsig not be used?

You should not use Chlorsig if you:
  • are allergic to chloramphenicol or any ingredients in Chlorsig ointment
  • are pregnant or are breastfeeding
  • family history of blood dyscrasias including aplastic anaemia

How should Chlorsig be used?

You should apply your Chlorsig eye ointment to the inside lower lid of your infected eye, 3-4 times daily according to the instructions provided. You should continue to apply your Chlorsig eye ointment for up to 5 days even if your symptoms have improved and for at least 48 hours after your eye looks normal and free of infection.

Missed dose of Chlorsig

If you miss a dose of Chlorsig eye ointment apply it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to apply the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not apply a double dose.

How should Chlorsig be stored?

You should store your Chlorsig below 25°C in a cool dry place.
