Habitrol Mint Lozenge 2mg is indicated for the relief of nicotine withdrawal symptoms in nicotine dependency, as an aid to smoking cessation. Habitrol Mint Lozenge 2mg may be used as part of a smoking reduction strategy by smokers who are unable or not ready to stop smoking abruptly, as a step towards stopping completely. Habitrol Mint Lozenge 2mg may be used by smokers who are unable or not ready to quit on occasions when temporary abstinence from smoking is desired.
How does Habitrol Mint Lozenge 2mg work?
Habitrol Mint Lozenge 2 mg is a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
- As the lozenge dissolves slowly, it releases nicotine.
- The nicotine is absorbed through the lining of your mouth into your bloodstream.
- This replaces some of the nicotine previously obtained from cigarettes, helping reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.
- It delivers nicotine more slowly and at a lower level than smoking, without exposing you to cigarette smoke, tar, or carbon monoxide.
- By gradually reducing the number of lozenges used, your body can adjust to receiving less nicotine until treatment is stopped.
For best absorption, suck the lozenge slowly and “park” it between your cheek and gum when the taste becomes strong; do not chew or swallow it whole. Avoid acidic drinks such as coffee, fruit juice, or fizzy drinks for 15 minutes before and while using it.
What does Habitrol Mint Lozenge 2mg contain?
Each 2 mg lozenge contains 6.144 mg nicotine bitartrate dihydrate (equivalent to 2 mg nicotine)
The other excipients are:
Maltitol Sodium carbonate anhydrous, Sodium hydrogen carbonate, Polyacrylate dispersion 30% ,Xanthan gum, Menthol Peppermint oil, Aspartame, Magnesium stearate, Colloidal Silicon Dioxide
What are the side effects of Habitrol Mint Lozenge 2mg?
Common effects can include irritation of the mouth or throat, hiccups, cough, nausea, indigestion, abdominal discomfort, headache, dizziness, and sleep disturbance. Some symptoms may also be related to nicotine withdrawal.
Stop using the product and seek urgent medical help for signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing. Seek prompt advice for chest pain, marked palpitations, or severe or persistent symptoms.
When should Habitrol Mint Lozenge 2mg not be used?
- Non-smokers.
- Children under 12 years.
- Anyone allergic to nicotine or any ingredient in the lozenge.
Seek advice before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; aged 12–17 years; have recently had a heart attack or stroke; have worsening or uncontrolled angina, a serious irregular heartbeat, or uncontrolled high blood pressure; or have diabetes, an overactive thyroid, a phaeochromocytoma, severe liver or kidney disease, inflammation of the oesophagus, or a stomach/duodenal ulcer.
A healthcare professional can help balance the risks of NRT against continued smoking and review other medicines that may need adjustment when smoking stops.
What medications interact with Habitrol Mint Lozenge 2mg?
Habitrol Mint 2 mg lozenges have few direct medicine interactions. The main issue is that stopping or reducing smoking removes chemicals in tobacco smoke that speed up the breakdown of some medicines. Their blood levels may then rise, even though nicotine itself is not responsible.
Medicines that may need closer monitoring or dose adjustment include:
- Theophylline
- Clozapine and olanzapine
- Warfarin
- Insulin and other diabetes medicines, because glucose control may change
- Ropinirole
- Some medicines for blood pressure or heart conditions, including propranolol and prazosin
- Caffeine can also have a stronger effect after stopping smoking
Avoid combining Habitrol lozenges with other nicotine products—such as nicotine patches, gum, sprays, vaping products, or cigarettes—unless a healthcare professional has recommended a specific combination. Too much nicotine may cause nausea, sweating, dizziness, headache, vomiting, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.
Tell your pharmacist or prescriber that you are stopping or reducing smoking, particularly if you take any of the medicines above. Do not change a prescribed medicine yourself.
How should Habitrol Mint Lozenge 2mg be taken and for how long?
Habitrol Mint 2 mg lozenges are used when you feel the urge to smoke, rather than at fixed dose times. Therefore, if you miss a lozenge:
- Suck 1 lozenge slowly when you feel the urge to smoke.
- A typical amount is 8–12 lozenges per day.
- Use only 1 lozenge at a time and no more than 1 per hour.
- Maximum: 15 lozenges in 24 hours.
- Move the lozenge around your mouth occasionally and let it dissolve; do not chew or swallow it whole.
- After about 8 weeks, gradually reduce to 1–2 lozenges daily, then stop.
- Do not continue beyond 12 weeks without consulting a healthcare professional.
The 2 mg strength is generally intended for people who smoke 20 or more cigarettes per day, or who have not succeeded with the 1 mg strength. Avoid acidic drinks such as coffee or soft drinks for 15 minutes before and during use. Follow the current pack instructions and seek advice before combining it with another nicotine product.
