Clavulox general information

What is Clavulox used for?

Clavulox Palatable Drops are a combination broad-spectrum antibiotic used for short-term treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections in cats and dogs. Infections that can be treated by Clavulox Palatable Drops include, skin disease, such as deep and superficial pyodermas; urinary tract infections; upper and lower respiratory tract infection; enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine).

How does Clavulox work?

Clavulox Palatable Drops contain a combination of two antibiotics. Amoxycillin is as an antibiotic similar to penicillin and belongs to the beta-lactam group of antibiotics, which block the formation of the bacterial cell wall and this kills the bacteria. However, amoxycillin can be inactivated by the bacterial enzyme beta-lactamase that makes certain bacteria resistant to amoxycillin. Clavulanic acid is an antibiotic structurally related to the penicillins that is able to inactivate a wide range of beta-lactamase enzymes commonly found in amoxycillin-resistant bacteria. This dual action of Clavulox Palatable Drops provides a broad spectrum antibiotic and a beta-lactamase inhibitor, which extends the range of susceptible bacteria. Clavulox Palatable Drops are effective against a wide range of bacteria, including susceptible Staphylococci, Streptococci and Escherichia coli, and are used to treat infections common to cats and dogs caused by these bacteria.

What does Clavulox contain?

Clavulox Palatable Drops contain a combination of the active ingredients amoxycillin 50mg/ml as amoxicillin trihydate and clavulanic acid 12.5mg/ml as potassium clavulanate, which are antibiotics used to treat a wide range of common bacterial infections in cats and dogs. When powdered Clavulox is reconstituted with 14mL of water making 15mL Clavulox Palatable Drops, each drop contains 62.5 mg/ml Clavulox.

Treating infection in cats and dogs with Clavulox

Clavulox Palatable Drops contain a combination of two antibiotics, amoxycillin, that kills bacteria, and clavulanic acid that inactivates the beta-lactamase enzyme commonly found in amoxycillin-resistant bacteria and therefore helps prevent resistance to amoxycillin. Clavulox Palatable Drops are used for short-term treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections in cats and dogs, including skin disease, such as deep and superficial pyodermas; urinary tract infections; upper and lower respiratory tract infection; enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine).

What are the side effects of Clavulox?

Gastrointestinal symptoms including diarrhoea and vomiting have been reported after giving Clavulox Palatable Drops to dogs and cats.

When should Clavulox not be used?

You should not give Clavulox to your cat or dog if they:
  • show signs of allergic reaction or hypersensitivity to amoxycillin or have had a reaction with any other beta-lactams antibiotic, including cephalosporins; or clavulanic acid; or any of the other ingredients in Clavulox Palatable Drops
  • have kidney problems that causes them to produce less urine than normal
  • have liver problems

How should Clavulox be given?

You should give Clavulox Palatable Drops orally to your dog or cat twice daily. The recommended dose is 12.5mg/kg (1ml/5kg or 1ml/11lbs) bodyweight. Use the graduated dropper provided to measure the correct amount for your pet; the dropper measures 0.25 to 1.0mL and 1 drop provides 2.5mg Clavulox. For refractory infections (Infections that do not respond or are resistant to medication) particularly respiratory tract infections, you may need to double the dose to 25mg/kg (2ml/5kg or 2ml/11lbs) bodyweight.

How long should Clavulox be given?

You should continue to give Clavulox Palatable Drops to your pet as recommended by your vet, usually for 5 to 7 days when your cat or dog should improve, or for 48 hours after all symptoms have gone. If needed your vet may suggest a longer course of treatment, for example, 10-20 days for chronic skin disease, 10-28 days for chronic cystitis, 8-10 days for respiratory disease.

Missed dose of Clavulox

If you miss a dose of Clavulox Palatable Drops give it to your pet as you remember, unless it is time to give the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not give a double dose.

How should Clavulox be stored?

You should store the made up suspension of Clavulox Palatable Drops in the fridge 2-8°C for 10 days then discard. You can store the powder before adding water in a cool dry place below 25°C.
