Condyline general information

What is Condyline used for?

Condyline topical solution is used to treat external condylomata acuminate or genital warts, which are growths of the skin caused by infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Genital warts are a sexually transmitted condition, caused by spread of the virus during skin to skin contact, and affect the genital areas including the penis, cervix and vulva. Infection with HPV can predispose cervical, penile or vulval cancer. Condyline solution is a topical application that attacks the wart containing the virus, which destroys the wart and prevents spread of the virus.

How does Condyline work?

Condyline topical solution contains Podophyllotoxin, a cytotoxic chemical which is the active component of the plant extract podophyllin, a resin prepared from the roots of the North American Mayapple plant (Podophyllum peltatum). Genital warts are caused by infection of skin cells with a virus; the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Podophyllotoxin in Condyline solution acts directly on the nucleus of the virus-infected skin cells that form the wart, to inhibit cell division, which kills the viral infected cells and prevents the virus replicating. The dead skin cells are eventually replaced with new cells as the wart dies away.

What does Condyline contain?

Condyline topical solution contains the active ingredient podophyllotoxin (5mg/ml or 0.5%), a cytotoxic plant extract used to treat genital warts, in a topical alcoholic solution. It also contains in an ethanol, lactic acid, sodium lactate and purified water.

What are the side effects of Condyline?

The most commonly reported side effects when using Condyline topical solution include: local dryness, soreness, tenderness, or stinging of treated skin, also superficial skin peeling or ulceration. These side effects usually start on the second or third day of treatment as the wart cells start to die away.

You should not use Condyline if you:
  • are allergic to podophyllotoxin or any ingredients in Condyline solution
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • are using any other podophyllin preparation

Repeat each week, for a maximum of 5 successive weeks, as required. You should apply only to the warts; avoid covering large areas of uninfected skin, as this may cause skin reactions. Also, avoid contact with broken or inflamed skin, with the eyes or with mucosal skin such as in the penis, rectum, or vagina.
