Berocca Performance 50+ general information
What is Berocca Performance 50+ used for?
Berocca Performance 50+ effervescent tablets are used as a vitamin and mineral supplement to a normal healthy diet and is tailored to help meet the needs of the over 50s. Berocca Performance 50+ is used in addition to good nutrition to promote a healthy active life by supporting physical stamina and improving cognitive function. Berocca Performance 50+ also contains extract of Panax Ginseng, which is an ancient traditional herbal medicine found in the Northern Hemisphere and East Asia with medicinal properties that have been used for thousands of years. The herbal extract and micronutrients in Berocca Performance 50+ play an important role in energy metabolism and cognitive function and act synergistically to help health conscious people make the most of life and its challenges by reducing tiredness and fatigue, improving concentration, clarity and stamina and enhancing mental performance.
How does Berocca Performance 50+ work?
Berocca Performance 50+ effervescent tablets contains a range of essential micronutrients that include vitamins and minerals, which are needed in only small amounts but are critical for maintaining normal physiological function and to promote good health. Vitamin C in Berocca Performance 50+ plays an important role in several of biosynthetic pathways, such as acting as a cofactor for the enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of collagen, which is important for healthy skin, wound healing, maintenance and repair of connective tissue like tendons and ligaments, and maintaining healthy bones. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that reduces the effects of free radicals and helps protect against oxidative stress causing cell damage. The B vitamins comprise a series of eight vitamins, including folic acid (vitamin B9) that play an important role in cell metabolism, which in basic terms is the conversion of organic materials, like carbohydrates, into energy (catabolic reactions). They are also involved anabolic reactions which include synthesis and repair of DNA and RNA, and the synthesis of neurotransmitters and other cell signalling molecules. These processes contribute to maintaining healthy skin and muscle tone, a healthy immune and nervous system, and producing enough red blood cells, which if deficient results in anaemia1. Folate levels have been found to correlate with mood and cognitive performance1. Water soluble vitamins like Vitamin C and the B series are not manufactured by the body but only obtained through the diet and any excess is excreted in the urine not stored, so it important to have the correct daily intake.
Magnesium is a mineral needed as a catalyst for many enzyme systems involved in biochemical reactions throughout the body and is retained by most cells of the body with 50% found in bone. It helps maintain normal function of muscles, nerves and the immune system; it also helps regulate blood sugar levels and blood pressure, keeps bones strong and is involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis. Zinc is another mineral that is essential for many aspects of cell metabolism and is particularly important for wound healing, normal brain function and male prostate gland function. Most of the calcium you take in is stored in the bones and teeth and is essential for building and maintaining bone strength. Calcium is also important in nerve transmission and muscle contraction. A deficiency in essential vitamins and minerals can contribute to a variety of problems and illnesses.
Nutritional deficiencies have been associated with cognitive decline and mood disturbances, particularly in older people. Since micronutrients are critical to maintaining normal healthy physiology and neurocognitive function, there is increasing interest in determining whether supplementation with micronutrients can have a beneficial effect on healthy individuals, other than avoiding clinical deficiency, since it is not always possible to meet the recommended intake of important micronutrients by diet alone.
In a randomised controlled study using Berocca Performance in healthy young adults, increased activation in areas of the brain associated with working memory and attentional processing was demonstrated using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This study indicated that acute (short term rapid) supplementation can have a beneficial effect on mood and cognition2. Using fMRI and Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential recordings (SSVEP), another measure of functional brain activity, it was further demonstrated that four weeks daily micronutrient supplementation with a multi-vitamin and -mineral combination may increase task-related changes in functional brain activity during working memory in healthy adults, by improving energy metabolism, and neurophysiological functions3. Normal brain function and neural signalling (communication between nerve cells) uses high levels of energy and increased brain activity correlates with increased blood flow to the brain. A study looking at chronic (long-terms) micronutrient supplementation in normal healthy subjects, over eight weeks, demonstrated a placebo controlled increase in cerebral blood flow and energy expenditure while performing cognitive tasks, suggesting that both brain function and metabolism may be influenced by micronutrient supplementation, even when dietary intake is considered within recommended amounts4.
Berocca Performance 50+ also contains Panax Ginseng (also known as Asian Ginseng) extract, made from the root of a plant found in the Northern Hemisphere and East Asia with medicinal properties that have been used for thousands of years. The active components of Panax Ginseng are ginsenosides, which comprise a diverse group of steroidal saponins. Ginseng has been the subject of several clinical trials and is thought to have many pharmacological actions including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties that account for its many effects on the immune system, cardiovascular system, central nervous system and the hormone system controlled by the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal gland axis5, 6. The various pharmacological actions of ginseng in Berocca Focus are thought to contribute to improved cognitive performance and improved immune system function7.
Berocca Performance 50+ ensures that you have at least the recommended daily intake needed for a healthy active life and contains the required micronutrients to help maximise energy release from food to support vitality and stamina and enhance mental performance. Berocca Performance 50+ is also helpful if you are on a restricted diet or have a known deficiency of dietary intake of important vitamins and minerals. Berocca Performance 50+ effervescent tablets are quickly absorbed, easy to take and contain no artificial stimulants or preservatives.
