What is Alanase Nasal Spray used for?

Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg is used for short-term prevention and treatment of allergic rhinitis caused by seasonal allergy to pollen, also known as hay fever, and for perennial allergy to year-round allergens such as animal fur, mould and house dust mites.  Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg relieves symptoms of allergic rhinitis including nasal congestion, runny itchy nose, sneezing, tearing, itchy, red, and puffy eyes and problems sleeping.

How does Alanase Nasal Spray work?

Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg contains beclomethasone, a potent corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor properties that is used to control local inflammation in the nasal passages.  Beclomethasone in Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg blocks the local production of inflammatory chemicals, like prostaglandins and cytokines and also causes vasoconstriction (narrowing) of the blood vessels in the nasal lining.  These actions of Beclomethasone in Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg reduces signs of inflammation, including mucus production, swelling and irritation, which helps relieve symptoms like runny itchy nose, nasal congestion and sneezing. 

What does Alanase Nasal Spray contain?

Alanase Nasal Spray contains the active ingredient beclomethasone dipropionate 50mcg, a potent corticosteroid and anti-inflammatory used to prevent and treat various forms of rhinitis.  It also contains benzalkonium chloride, phenethyl alcohol, polysorbate, dispersible cellulose, glucose (anhydrous) and purified water.  Each actuation (spray) delivers 50mcg beclomethasone dipropionate into the nasal passages and each bottle of Beconase Alanase Nasal Spray contains 200 doses.

Treating allergic rhinitis with Alanase Nasal Spray

What are the side effects of Alanase Nasal Spray?

Although oral corticosteroids can have many side effects, Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg acts locally with reduced risk of systemic effects unless used excessively.  Commonly reported side effects of Beconase nasal spray may include: dryness and irritation in the nose and throat, unpleasant taste and smell after using the spray, headache and less commonly, nosebleed. 

When should Alanase Nasal Spray not be used?

You should not use Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg if you:

• are allergic to beclomethasone or any ingredients in Alanase Nasal Spray
• are pregnant or are breastfeeding, without discussion with your doctor
• have an infectious disease or injury in the nose as Alanase Nasal Spray may lower resistance to infection
• are using other inhaled or oral corticosteroids

How should Alanase Nasal Spray be taken?

Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg is intended for nasal administration only for adults and children over 6 years of age and one dose will last for up to 12 hours.  Shake your Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg before use and apply one or two sprays into each nostril twice a day, morning and evening, as instructed by your health professional.  After 2-3 days you can reduce this to one spay into each nostril twice a day.  You should use your Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg regularly to achieve maximum relief from symptoms and should have improvement of symptoms within 7 days.   You should continue for as long as recommended by your doctor or pharmacist, usually throughout the hay fever season but for no more than 3 months.  For full benefit you can start using your Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg at the start of the hay fever season before you experience symptoms and this way you may be able to prevent symptoms developing. 

How long should you take Alanase Nasal Spray?

You should continue to use your Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg regularly to achieve maximum relief from symptoms and for as long as recommended by your doctor or pharmacist, usually throughout the hay fever season but for no more than 3 months.  For full benefit you can start using your Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg at the start of the hay fever season before you experience symptoms and this way you may be able to prevent symptoms developing. 

Missed dose of Alanase Nasal Spray

If you miss a dose of Alanase Nasal Spray 50mcg take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose.  Do not take a double dose.

How should Alanase Nasal Spray be stored?

You should store your Alanase Nasal Spray below 25°C in a cool dry place.
