Budecort general information

What is Budecort used for?

Budecort respules 1mg are used as an inhaled medication for long-term maintenance treatment of asthma, including management of chronic asthma, preventing exacerbations of asthma and exercise-induced asthma, and to prevent but not treat asthma attack.  Budecort is known as a “preventer” asthma medication and is used regularly as part of an asthma management plan, which may also include a “reliever” or “rescue” medication, for use when needed.  Budecort controls underlying inflammation of the airways and reduces sensitivity to allergens or irritants in the air, improving lung function and reducing symptoms of asthma, including, wheezing, cough tightness of the chest and shortness of breath.   Budecort respules are also used for treatment of laryngotracheobronchitis or croup in infants and children.  Croup is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract and can interfere with normal breathing due to swelling of the airways.  Budecort reduces inflammation of the airways and helps control symptoms of croup, which include a barking cough, stridor (a high-pitched wheezing sound when inhaling caused by disrupted airflow) and fever.

How does Budecort work?

Budecort respules 1mg contain budesonide, a corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory activity, used to reduce inflammation of the airways in asthma and croup.  Budesonide in Budecort respules acts directly on the airway walls to block inflammatory reactions by inhibiting the production of inflammatory chemicals like cytokines, prostaglandins and leukotrienes.  These are released in the airways in response to asthma triggers, such as an allergens or irritants in the air; also in response to viral infection.  Inflammation is one of the underlying causes of asthma along with bronchospasm, which is constriction (narrowing of the bronchioles (small airways).  Budesonide in Budecort respules reduces the swelling and inflammation in the airways, which helps to prevent symptoms of asthma like wheezing, cough, tightness of the chest and shortness of breath.  It does not relieve bronchospasm which happens during an asthma attack; this needs a bronchodilator “reliever” medication to open the airways.  Budesonide in Budecort respules also reduces swelling and inflammation due to infection in the airways that causes croup, relieving symptoms like barking cough, stridor (a high-pitched wheezing sound when inhaling caused by disrupted airflow) and fever.  Inhaled budesonide in Budecort respules is an effective topical anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, with minimal systemic effect, due to its potent local effect on the airways and short half-life.

What does Budecort contain?

Budecort respules contain the active ingredient budesonide 1mg/2ml in aqueous suspension.  Each respule delivers a single dose of 1mg using a nebuliser, which creates a fine mist or aerosol for inhalation directly into the lungs.

What are the health risks of Budecort?

Long term use of respules 1mg may cause the adrenal glands, which produce endogenous (naturally occurring) corticosteroids, to stop working efficiently.  This may slow down the growth rate in children and will need regular monitoring. Budecort respules 1mg may also cause decreased bone mineral density if used for long periods.

You should take the contents of your Budecort respules 1mg by inhalation using a nebuliser twice daily.  The dose you take and how often depends on the severity of your asthma, your age, prior asthma therapy (such as oral corticosteroids) and should be as recommended by your doctor.  For maintenance treatment your doctor may reduce your dose.  To reduce the risk of candida infection of the mouth or throat, you should rinse out your mouth with water after inhaling.  To prevent skin irritation of the face you should wash your face after using the nebuliser with a mask.  You should continue to inhale your Budecort respules for as long as recommended by your doctor.  In infants and children with croup, Budecort respules should be inhaled using a nebuliser as a single dose of 2mg or two doses of 1mg 30 minutes apart, which can be repeated every 12 hour for a maximum of 36 hours or until symptoms improve.
