Voritek general information

What is Voritek used for?

Voritek tablets 200mg are used to treat serious invasive potentially life-threatening fungal infections in various parts of the body, including serious fungal infections, in patients who do not respond to or cannot tolerate other antifungal medications.  These include Invasive aspergillosis, caused by the fungus Aspergillus (a common mould fungus) that usually begins with a respiratory infection and can spread to other organs and tissues, causing a serious infection.  Aspergillus is usually only harmful to those with an underlying respiratory problem or who have a compromised immune system such as due to HIV infection or due to cancer chemotherapy.

Voritek tablets 200mg are also used to treat serious Candida infections, including Candida krusei, which is a drug resistant form of the yeast Candida to the standard antifungal treatment with voriconazole and is particularly harmful to the immunocompromised, patients with blood cancers and transplant recipients.  Other harmful invasive Candida infections that Voritek 200 is used to treat include oesophageal and disseminated candidiasis (or hepatosplenic candidiasis) usually found in patients with blood cancers, and candidaemia (candida infection that has spread to the blood stream) in patients with a normal white blood cell count.

Voritek tablets 200mg are used to treat serious fungal infections caused by Scedosporium species of fungus that is drug resistant to other antifungals, and Fusarium species of fungus that is a plant fungus that causes serious life-threatening infections in humans.

How does Voritek work?

Voritek tablets 200mg contain voriconazole 200mg, a broad-spectrum antifungal drug belonging to the triazole group of antifungals.  Voriconazole in Voritek 200 is a potent and specific inhibitor of fungal enzymes necessary for the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membrane that is not found in animal cells.  Voriconazole in Voritek tablets 200mg weakens the fungal cell membrane, causing the cell contents to leak out, which kills the fungus, preventing the infection from spreading.  Voritek tablets 200mg are particularly effective for fungal infections that are resistant to other antifungals and against species of fungus that cause potentially life-threatening infections.
