What is Apo-Amoxi used for?

Apo-Amoxi capsules 250mg are a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat common infections caused by a variety of bacteria in different parts of the body, including upper and lower respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis and pharyngitis, pneumonia, otitis medis (ear infection); urinary tract infections such as cystitis and urethritis; infections of the skin and soft tissue; peritonitis; the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea; gynaecological infections including those following childbirth (puerperal sepsis) and septic abortion; dental infection like abscess, typhoid and paratyphoid fever; septicaemia (bacterial infection of the blood). Apo-Amoxi capsules 250mg are also used to treat bacterial endocarditis (infection of the heart valves and lining); and as prophylaxis (to prevent) against bacterial endocarditis, which can develop after some surgical procedures such as dental extraction, particularly for anyone with a condition that puts them at risk of developing bacterial endocarditis. Apo-Amoxi capsules 250mg are also used in combination with other medication to treat peptic ulcers (duodenal and gastric) caused by infection with Helicobacter pylori.

How does Apo-Amoxi work?

Amoxycillin in Apo-Amoxi capsules 250mg contains a structure called the beta-lactam ring, which blocks the formation of the bacterial cell wall in susceptible bacteria, and this kills the bacteria. Apo-Amoxi capsules 250mg are effective against a wide range of common bacteria found in general practice and in hospitals including: Streptococci and non-resistant Staphylococci, salmonellae; Haemophilus; Neisseria; Helicobacter pylori that causes peptic ulcers; among others. However, amoxycillin can be inactivated by an enzyme called beta-lactamase, produced by resistant bacteria, such as some staphylococci, which destroys its beta-lactam ring and makes those bacteria resistant to amoxycillin.

What are the side effects of Apo-Amoxi?

What is an allergic reaction to antibiotics like Apo-Amoxi?

Some people are allergic to penicillin-like antibiotics and may develop a hypersensitivity reaction, which can be a mild to severe skin reaction, with symptoms like rash, itching, blotchy red patches, hives (urticaria), dermatitis. A more serious reaction may give you symptoms like swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body, shortness of breath, wheezing or trouble breathing.

When should Apo-Amoxi not be used?

You should not use Apo-Amoxi if you:

• are allergic to amoxycillin or any other beta-lactams antibiotic, including cephalosporins, or any of the other ingredients in Apo-Amoxi capsules 250mg
• have kidney disease or glandular fever, without discussion with your doctor
• taking medications that interact with Apo-Amoxi capsules 250mg, including probenecid and allopurinol (for gout), oral contraceptives (as these may be less effective due to amoxycillin), tetracycline antibiotics

How should Apo-Amoxi be taken?

You should take your Apo-Amoxi capsules 250mg with a glass of water, with or without food. The dose you take and how often depends on what you are being treated for and your doctors recommendation, which may be 1-2 capsules 1-3 times a day, usually for up to 5-10 days. For some infections you will be given a higher dose for a shorter time. Always finish your course of capsules even if you feel better, if not, the infection may not clear up completely or your symptoms may return and you run the risk of the bacteria causing your infection developing resistance to Apo-Amoxi.

How long should you take Apo-Amoxi?

You should complete the course of Apo-Amoxi capsules 250mg as prescribed by your doctor, usually for up to 5-10 days, depending on what you are being treated for. Always finish your course of capsules even if you feel better, if not, the infection may not clear up completely or your symptoms may return and you run the risk of the bacteria causing your infection developing resistance to Apo-Amoxi.

Missed dose of Apo-Amoxi

If you miss a dose of Apo-Amoxi take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.

How should Apo-Amoxi be stored?

You should store your Apo-Amoxi capsules 250mg below 25°C in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight.
