Staphlex 250mg

Staphlex general information

What is Staphlex used for?

Staphlex capsules 250mg are a narrow-spectrum antibiotic used to treat common infections caused by a variety of bacteria in different parts of the body, including skin and soft tissue infections, such as boils (infected hair follicle or furunculosis), abscesses, carbuncles (made up of several boils), cellulitis (infected area of skin causing inflammation), infected wounds, infected burns, protection of skin grafts, and impetigo (superficial skin infection causing sores); upper and lower respiratory tract infections such as such as bronchitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis and pharyngitis, pneumonia, otitis medis (ear infection); osteomyelitis (infection of the bone); enteritis (infection of the intestines); endocarditis (infection of the inner lining of the heart usually valves); urinary tract infection, meningitis and septicaemia (bacterial infection of the blood). Staphlex capsules 250mg can be used as follow up treatment for serious life threatening infections but should not be used as initial therapy.

How does Staphlex work?

Staphlex capsules 250mg contain flucloxacillin, a narrow-spectrum antibiotic of the group belonging to the isoxazolyl penicillin group of antibiotics. Flucloxacillin in Staphlex capsules 250mg contains a structure called the beta-lactam ring, which blocks the formation of the bacterial cell wall in susceptible bacteria, and this kills the bacteria. Some bacteria become resistant to the action of many antibiotics in the penicillin group by producing an enzyme called penicillinase, which is a specific beta-lactamase enzyme that can destroy beta-lactam ring in these antibiotics and thereby removing their ability to kill bacteria. Flucloxacillin in Staphlex capsules 250mg is not inactivated by beta-lactamases and is therefore used primarily to treat penicillin-resistant bacteria, including streptococci, staphylococci, Clostridia and Neisseria.

They also contain povidone pvpk 30, talc, sodium starch glycollate, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, gelatine, titanium dioxide, fd&c blue 1, red iron oxide, yellow iron oxide.

Treating bacterial infection with Staphlex

Unlike many penicillins, flucloxacillin in Staphlex capsules 250mg is not inactivated by beta-lactamases, an enzyme produced by some penicillin-resistant bacteria, and is therefore used primarily to treat these antibiotic-resistant infection, including those caused by Streptococci, Staphylococci, Clostridia and Neisseria.
