What is Flucazole used for?

Flucazole capsules 150mg are used to treat vaginal candidiasis (vaginal thrush) a yeast infection of the vagina with characteristic symptoms including vaginal itching and soreness, and white, odourless, discharge from the vagina.  Flucazole capsules 150mg are intended as a one-off oral treatment and should provide relief of symptoms after the first day, although it may take several days to be fully effective. 

How does Flucazole work?

Flucazole capsules 150mg contain Flucazole, which is a broad-spectrum antifungal drug belonging to the triazole group of antifungals.  Flucazole in Flucazole capsules 150mg is a potent and specific inhibitor of fungal enzymes necessary for the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membrane that is not found in animal cells.  Flucazole in Flucazole capsules 150mg weakens the fungal cell membrane, causing the cell contents to leak out which kills the fungus, preventing the infection from spreading and relieving symptoms caused by the infection, including, itching and inflammation.    

What does Flucazole contain?

Flucazole capsules 150mg contain the active ingredient Flucazole, a broad-spectrum antifungal used to treat vaginal candidiasis.  They also contain lactose, maize starch, sodium lauryl sulphate, colloidal hydrated silica, magnesium stearate, gelatin, titanium dioxide (E171), shellac, dehydrated alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, propylene glycol, ammonia solution, potassium hydroxide and black iron oxide (E172).

Treating vaginal thrush with Flucazole

Flucazole capsules 150mg contain Flucazole, a synthetic broad-spectrum antifungal agent that is used to treat vaginal candidiasis (vaginal thrush), caused by the yeast Candida albicans.  The most common sites of thrush infection are the mucous membranes particularly of the vagina.  Flucazole in Flucazole capsules 150mg specifically inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of the fungal cell membrane, which kills the fungus and stops it spreading.  Flucazole capsules 150mg relieve the symptoms of vaginal thrush, including vaginal itching and soreness, and white, odourless, discharge from the vagina.  Flucazole capsules 150mg are intended as a one-off oral treatment and should provide relief of symptoms after the first day, although it may take several days to be fully effective.

What are the side effects of Flucazole?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Flucazole capsules 150mg include headache, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia (indigestion), skin rash.

When should Flucazole not be used?

You should not use Flucazole capsules 150mg if you:

• are allergic to Flucazole or any ingredients in Flucazole capsules
• are pregnant or are breastfeeding, without discussion with your doctor
• have kidney or liver disease or a heart condition
• are taking medicines that interact with Flucazolethe antiviral rifampicin, rifabutin or zidovudine; terfenadine or astemizole for allergy, cisapride for reflux, the anticonvulsant phenytoin, the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, oral antidiabetics like glipizide, tolbutamide or glibenclamide, theophylline for asthma, the immunosuppressants tacrolimus and cyclosporine, some benzodiazepines such as midazolam

What medications interact with Flucazole?

Several medications interact with Flucazole capsules 150mg and should either not be taken while you are taking Flucazole or only after discussion and instruction from your doctor:

• Drugs that cause increased side effects with Flucazole: cisapride for reflux can cause heart problems
• Drugs that affect Flucazole: the antiviral rifampicin, rifabutin or zidovudine; the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide
• Drugs that are affected by Flucazole: the anticonvulsant phenytoin, oral antidiabetics like glipizide, tolbutamide or glibenclamide; theophylline for asthma, immunosuppressants tacrolimus and cyclosporine, some benzodiazepines such as midazolam

How should Flucazole be taken?

You should take your Flucazole capsule 150mg swallowed whole with a glass of water, with or without food and at any time of day.  You should take Flucazole capsule 150mg only as single dose as it is intended as a one-off oral treatment.  Your symptoms should start to disappear after the first day, although it may take several days to be fully effective.
